denial of service attack

denial of service attack
An attack by an intruder that prevents a computer system from providing a service. A denial-of-service attack will typically involve opening and dropping a large number of TCP/IP connections very quickly so that the target system spends all its time dealing with the connection overhead to the point that it cannot respond to valid user requests. Other attacks may exploit known software security holes to crash servers.
A denial-of-service attack is much easier to execute than an attempt at unauthorized access, because the denial-of-service attack never actually requires access to the system.
